Winter Holidays in Lanzarote

Whilst other Spanish hotpots are putting away the sun loungers for another year the Canary Islands are just gearing up for their busiest season.  Thanks to a temperate climate that guarantees temperatures in excess of 20C all year round.

As a result, Lanzarote remains one of the most popular destinations for British tourists in the Canarian archipelago – and is expected to attract around one million visitors from the UK and Ireland this year.

 Holiday Accommodation in Lanzarote

Holiday apartments in Lanzarote  remain the best value option for anyone visiting the island on a budget this winter.  With prices starting from as little as £250 a week for a one bed apartment in the islands most popular resort – Puerto del Carmen.

Playa Blanca in the south of the island is the ideal spot for anyone in search of a holiday villa.  As the resort was purpose built for this task and boasts the best range of upmarket accommodation on the island – along with some high quality hotels.

Culture vultures though should head North.  Where the islands third main resort of Costa Teguise is ideally placed to cater to anyone keen to explore Lanzarote´s many cultural attractions, such as the Jameos del Agua, the Cactus Garden and the Mirador del Rio.

Attractions that were all created under the aegis of the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique who has done so much to shape the controlled development of tourism on the island.

 Travelling To Lanzarote

The islands sole airport - Arrecife (ACE) is located around three miles outside the capital city of the same name.

The flight time from the UK is approximately four hours and the bulk of British flights to Lanzarote arrive on the main changeover day of Thursday.  Although other flights are available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

The island is serviced by a number of tour operators – such as Thomson and Thomas Cook.  As well as a growing raft of low cost airlines such as Monarch and easy Jet. As a result it is usually possible to source a flight to the island for around £200 or less.

 Transfer To Resort

The majority of visitors to the island are transferred to their resort by their tour operators on board coaches.  Independent tourists are limited to taxis as the public bus service doesn’t run directly from the airport to the main resorts.

Visitors should note that the queues for taxis can become lengthy. Especially on the busier changeover days such as Thursday.

 Getting Around Lanzarote

The same sort of scenario applies when it comes to touring the island.  As there is a good public bus route which runs along the south east coastline, connecting the three main resorts.  But services become more limited when heading inland – which is where the vast bulk of the main tourist attractions are located.

Car hire in Lanzarote remains the best option – offering flexibility at decent rates.  With prices working out at around €20 per day and petrol available much more cheaply than in the UK at around €1 per litre.
