Rural Breaks In Lanzarote

Along with the other Canary Islands Lanzarote has an undeserved reputation as little more than a bucket and spade beach holiday destination.  Yet despite attracting over 1.5 million visitors a year the island is in fact still largely unspoiled.  With package tourism all well contained within the confines of the three main tourist resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca.

A large percentage of visitors to the island return for at least a second holiday.  As many tourists fall in love with the islands unique volcanic scenery an tranquil pace of life.  This has helped to create a growing demand for rural holidays on the island – as tourists seek to escape the hustle and bustle of the main resorts. Opting instead for accommodation in the countryside.

As a result, the island is now home to over a dozen good quality rural hotels and fincas.  Whilst tourists can also choose from a selection of over one hundred rural holiday villas in Lanzarote.  Many of which combine all the charm of a character property with modern amenities and facilities such as high speed internet connections.

One of the most impressive of these rural properties is Casa Aljibe, which is located in the small village of Los Valles.  Around ten minutes drive from the former island capital of Teguise.  And which has graced the cover of the well known Spanish magazine Casa Y Campo.

The stunning accommodation here has been created out of an old farm aljibe – or water deposit.  With huge thick walls coloured by years of use and deep stairs leading down into the main living area from the entrance. The owners of the property have decorated with great style and sensitivity and the property also boasts a very private Jacuzzi and swimming pool.

Previous guests have even included minor royalty – such as the Princess of Greece.  And rates start from around €120 per night, depending of course on the time of year.

At the other end of the price scale cheap and cheerful rural accommodation can be found in the tiny village of Tabayesco.  Which is located close to the small seaside resort of Arrieta.  Where the Finca La Quentia offers double self catering rooms from as little as €25 per night. The finca boasts decent on site amenities such as a swimming pool and well tended gardens.  And guests can enjoy a meal in one of the many restaurants located in nearby Arrieta.
