Summer Holidays in Puerto del Carmen
The British media is full of coverage claiming that many in the UK will be opting for a holiday at home this year. And there is no denying the fact that the weak pound and the credit crunch will take its toll on foreign holiday bookings.
But the small Spanish island of Lanzarote, in the Canaries, still expects to welcome well over one million tourists this year. Despite the current economic climate. With the bulk of these tourists visiting the island over the busy summer months.
Lanzarote is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain. Thanks to the fact that the island enjoys good weather all year round and boasts a host of great beaches and unique volcanic scenery. Forged by a series of intense volcanic eruptions that rocked the island during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The island was first conquered by the Spanish crown as along ago as the early 1400´s – the first of the Canary Islands to fall under direct rule. And soon became an important part of Spain’s growing empire due to its location on the main trade routes between the New World and the Old.
Tourism has long been the economic mainstay of the modern Lanzarote and is concentrated in three main resorts – Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise.
Many British tourists will be opting for good value breaks in self catering accommodation this year, according to local holiday companies. And the best selection of Lanzarote apartments can be found in the largest resort – Puerto del Carmen. Which was also the site where package tourism first took off on Lanzarote backing the 1970´s.
The resorts popularity isn’t that hard to fathom as it has been built around a 6km long stretch of golden sand that is absolutely ideal for holiday makers, especially families with young children. As the sea here is calm and the beach shelves gently into the water.
The main beach of Playa Grande is the most popular in the resort – and boasts good amenities such as sun loungers and showers. But for something a little more peaceful visitors should head for the beach at Playa Chica – which is also home to the leading water sports operators in the resort. Providing an ideal spot for those who want to try their hand at scuba diving.
There’s also a wide selection of villas in Puerto del Carmen available for holiday rental. Which is an ideal solution for larger parties as the accommodation costs can then be shared? With prices starting from around €400 per week for a two bedroom villa with private pool.
