The Bonne Terre Mines – Bonne Terre, Missouri
Tucked into this area of southeast Missouri is one of National Geographic’s picks for its Top 10 Greatest Adventures. The Bonne Terre Mines were started in 1860 and continued production until 1962. Today the mine, with its 5 levels is a true vision to be seen and a SCUBA diving site that you will not want to miss.
You can take a walking tour of the first two levels of the mine or you can take a boat tour on the Billion Gallon Lake. The lake is so clear you can see fo 100 feet at all times. It has the world’s largest fresh water dive resort so if you are a diver this may be an experience you will want to be sure to take.
The mine is open year round. Summer hours (May – September) run from 9 am to 4 pm everyday. April hours offer weekday tours and winter hours are Fri, Sat. and Sun. from 9 to 4. So regardless of when you are going to be in the area you will be able to experience a mine very different from any other you have ever visited.
