Lanzarote – The Best Time to Visit

The semi-tropical island of Lanzarote is located in the Canaries.  Close to the coast of west Africa.  A location that creates a climate that is warm and sunny all year round.  And which is often likened to a non stop springtime.

But even on an island where the weather is seemingly always great there are pronounced patterns, variations and microclimates.  Which are well worth examining for anyone planning to book a holiday on the island.

During the winter months Lanzarote enjoys maximum temperatures of around 20 Celsius – making it sufficiently warm to enjoy days on the beach or by the pool in one of the many good quality hotels in Lanzarote.

However, there can be a pronounced variation in temperature between the north and the south of the island.  Thanks to the fact that any cloud tends to sit over the Risco de Famara range of cliffs, bringing temperatures down.  Precipitation is also more likely to occur in this part of the island as a result.

So holidaymakers are best advised to focus on the resort of Playa Blanca which is located right at the southern tip of the island.  Where they will also find some of the best villas in Lanzarote available for rent.

Air and sea temperatures start to creep up during the March, April and May.  Making the whole of the island more accessible.  But at the same time the Trade Winds also kick in.  These can blow across the whole of the island with considerable force – so reducing the air temperature.  Many tourists end up getting sunburn as a result, as the sun is still intense.  But these winds prove deceptive.

Playa Blanca remains the best option for reliable resort based weather conditions.  Whilst Puerto del Carmen in the centre of the island is also a good choice as it is well sheltered from the Trade Winds.

The summer months see temperatures rise in to the higher 20´s and often beyond.  But Lanzarote is still cooled by a welcome breeze.  As a result many tourists from Spain visit at this time of the year.  Keen to escape the more intense heat of the mainland.

Many locals and long term residents would agree though that autumn is the best time of year to visit Lanzarote.  As the summer crowds have dissipated and the sea is at it’s warmest.  Making swimming a real pleasure.  The Trade Winds have also died down.  And visitors can expect to enjoy lots of sunshine and temperatures in the mid 20´s across the island.
