Starring Role For Lanzarote In 2009

Lanzarote is widely tipped as one of the hottest holiday destinations for 2009.  Thanks to the upcoming release of the new film from Pedro Almodovar – entitled Broken Embraces.  Which stars Penelope Cruz –alongside some of Lanzarote´s best known beauty spots.

In recent years film releases such as Mamma Mia and Captain Correllis Mandolin have worked wonders for the tourist trade on the islands where they were shot.  And Lanzarote now hopes to benefit from a similar Hollywood halo effect with the release of the Spanish directors latest movie.

So what can first time visitors expect from their holiday on the Island of Fire?

Travelling To Lanzarote

Flights to Lanzarote from the UK and Ireland – two of the main tourist markets for the island – take four hours.  Which is just the right side of bearable.  The island is serviced by a number of low cost flight operators such as easyJet and Monarch – and prices average around £200 return, dependent of course on the time of year.

Transfer times from the airport to the main resorts are also minimal – thanks to the fact that Lanzarote is a relatively small island – measuring just 58km by 34km.

Holiday Accommodation

There’s no shortage of good quality hotels in Lanzarote.  The bulk of these are located in the island´s newest and southern most resort, Playa Blanca.  And range from five star luxury at the Gran Melia Volcan to more affordable four star accommodation at establishments such as the Princessa Yaiza and the H10 group’s Lanzarote Princess.

Tourists who prefer self catering accommodation should head for Puerto del Carmen, still the most popular resort on the island – which offers a wide choice of holiday villas and apartment complexes.  With prices starting from as little as £230 per week.

Climate & Weather

The key to Lanzarote´s on going popularity is undoubtedly the island’s great year round climate.  With temperatures rarely falling below 20 Celsius – even during the winter months.  Expect minimal rainfall too – on average just 9mm a month.

Tourist Attractions

Explore some of the natural beauty spots that feature prominely in the new Almodovar movie.  Such as the green lagoon at El Golfo and the beautiful beach at Famara.  Car hire and petrol are both relatively inexpensive on Lanzarote – with vehicle rental rates starting from around €20 per day.

Beaches

As a volcanic island many visitors expect to find themselves sunbathing on black sand beaches. But in fact only a handful of Lanzarote´s 90 plus beaches have black grains – with the vast majority boasting white or golden sand.
